FIELD DAY

LAMB TRIMMING COMPETITION

RULES

Date: Sunday 19th October 2008

Venue: Glanelan, Rhayader

One member 26 years of age or under on 1st September 2008 to prepare a lamb for a Fat Stock Show. Single Trimmer allowed.

All equipment to be used must be provided by the competitors including stand or holder.

Lambs will be provided by Radnor YFC.

Marking system:
Use of Shears: 40
Preparation Carding etc. 10
Finished Animal: 50
Total - 100 Marks.


Time allowed:- 1½ hours.

The winner will be asked to represent Radnor YFC at the Winter Fair 2008

SHEAR MAGIC COMPETITION

RULES

Date: Sunday 19th October 2008

Venue: Glanelan, Rhayader

One member 26 years of age or under on 1st September 2008 to design a promotional motif for the World Shearing and Wool handling Championships 19-22 July 2010. The motif should be suitable to be used on promotional materials i.e. t – shirts etc.

The motif should be an Original design, A4 size and suitable for screen printing on to black, grey, red & navy backgrounds.

The words ‘Royal Welsh - Shear Magic’ or Gwlad y Gwlân – Y Sioe Fawr and 19-22 July 2010 must be included, as the winning motif may be used on all promotional items for the championships.

The motif should be in Welsh only or English only.

Marking system: Total 100 marks.

Motiff should be brought to the Field Day already done.

EFFICIENCY WITH SAFETY

RULES

1. VENUE - the Radnor Field Day will be held at on the Glanelan, Rhayader, on the 19th October, 2008.

2. ELIGIBILITY - A team shall consist of four members. Two members of the team must be 21 years of age or under and two members must be 26 years of age or under on 1 September 2008. All competitors to hold either a full driving licence and/or tractor licence, which must be produced on the day of the competition.

ACCEPTABLE FIRST AID CERTIFICATES – At least one member of the team to hold a current First Aid Certificate of either The British Red Cross, St John Ambulance or an alternative nationally-recognised body (life from date of issue is three years). A copy of the First Aid Certificate must be produced on the day of the competition.

Competitors will be required to show their YFC Membership Cards. Failure to produce a card will result in a £5 penalty.

3. EQUIPMENT
3 x Tractors (normal spec)
1 x Twin Disc Fertiliser Spreader
1 x Hydraulic nozzle crop sprayer (up to 24m boom)
1 x 3metre Power Harrow

4. PROCEDURE
The team shall appoint a leader who will undertake the duties of a foreman.

TASK 1
Carry out daily checks on the tractor & fertiliser spreader.
Carry out a verbal risk assessment with judge on the given task. Including appropriate PPE for the task.
Attach fertiliser spreader to tractor, calibrate according to manufacturer’s instructions, take to field and set up for a day’s work as directed by the judge.
Return to yard and un-hitch spreader from tractor.


TASK 2
Carry out daily checks on the tractor and sprayer.
Carry out a verbal risk assessment with judge on the given task, including the safety aspects of the sprayer design and ensuring appropriate PPE is worn for the task.
Attach sprayer to the tractor, change nozzles as directed by the judge. Run through the calibration procedure as directed by the judge.
Take to field and set up for a days work.
Return to yard and un-hitch sprayer from tractor




TASK 3
Carry out daily checks on the tractor & Power Harrow.
Carry out a verbal risk assessment with judge on the given task. Including appropriate PPE for the task.
Attach Power Harrow to tractor.
Change 4 tines as instructed by judge.
Take to field and set up for a days work with soil conditions directed by the judge.
Take back to yard & un-hitch power harrow.

All competitors must take into account H&S at all times. Correct personal protective equipment must be worn. Safe start and safe stop procedures must be adhered to.

Competitors to provide their own tools. All equipment must be returned to its original place after completion of task

FIRST AID TASK

During the course of the practical exercise, a mock farm accident will be staged. Teams will be informed when the accident happens; the Farm Foreman must then decide which of his team members shall deal with the situation. It is expected that there will be by-standers who may be questioned regarding the accident. The First Aid Judge will indicate when the casualty has been satisfactorily dealt with and when the member or members may recommence work.

Knowledge of elementary First Aid is necessary, but in no case will competitors be expected to render assistance further than instructed in the Joint First Aid Manual of St. John Ambulance and The British Red Cross (available from WH Smith or other large bookshops). The Highway Code and Farm Safety Regulations must be applied at all times. If, in the opinion of the Judges, a competitor is undertaking a Task in a way likely to endanger them or others, the competitor will be stopped and the danger brought to his attention. The competitor will be expected to correct the matter and then continue with the Task.

5. TIMING - Thirty minutes will be allowed for completion of the tasks.

Radnor YFC Field Day

Cookery & Cookery Questionnaire
Theme: “Climate Change”

R U L E S

1. DATE AND VENUE – Sunday 19th October 2008 @ Glanelan, Rhayader by kind permission of Mr & Mrs R Lewis and family

2. ELIGIBILITY – Teams to consist of three members, one must be 26 years of age or under, one must be 21 years of age or under and one must be 16 years of age or under, on 1 September 2008, and full members of a Club affiliated to NFYFC.

Competitors are required to produce on the day of the competition their current and signed Membership Card, with suitable photo-ID, or a fine of £5 will be imposed for non-production.

3. PROCEDURE –
Each team will be required to prepare four dishes to the theme of “Climate Change” to include at least one savoury and one sweet dish. Each dish will be required to serve two people. A “dish” may include more than one item that forms a total and a drink counts as one dish.

Teams will be required to complete a Food Hygiene questionnaire.

4. EQUIPMENT – Competitors will be allowed two gas rings per team. (Members to bring their own cooker, along with an up to date corgi certificate for the cooker). No other heat is allowed. Electricity is not available.

Competitors will also be required to provide:
a) All equipment other than table.
b) All ingredients (these may be brought to the competition already weighed out and vegetables ready washed)

5. DISPLAYS – Competitors will be allowed a maximum display space of 90cm (width) by 60cm (depth) in which to display the dishes to their best advantage.

DISPLAYS WHICH EXCEED THE ABOVE DIMENSIONS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

There are no limitations on the contents of the displays, although competitors must:
(a) Display a menu card.
(b) Display details of recipes and costings.
(c) Ensure recipes are be available throughout the practical session for judges to examine.
(d) Display a nutrient card.

Judges will place emphasis on marking displays that complement the dishes.

7. TIMING – One hour to include preparation and tidying of the site. Competitors will be penalised at the rate of one mark per minute or part thereof over allotted time.

Display bays may be set up outside the one-hour preparation time into the allotted space - 30 minutes before the competition commences will be available for this.

The completion of the Food Hygiene questionnaire will be outside of the one-hour preparation and cooking time.

Competitors must wear white coats and be thoroughly smart in their appearance.

Competitors will be required to wear hairnets or hats.


The winners will be asked to represent Radnor at the Royal Show 2009.

FIELD DAY

DECORATING A CHRISTMAS TREE COMPETITION

R U L E S

Date: Sunday 19th October 2008

Venue: Glanelan, Rhayader

Team of two members, who will be 26 years of age or under on the 1st September 2008 to decorate a Christmas tree. Competitors to bring all decorations.

Members need to provide their own Xmas trees. Trees need to be approximately 5ft.

Time allowed – 1 hour.

Marking system: Originality 25:
Team work 25:
Overall effect 50:
Total 100 marks.

JUNIOR NATURE CHALLENGE COMPETITION

RULES

1. VENUE - the Radnor Field Day will be held at Glanelan, Rhayader on 19th October, 2008.

2. ELIGIBILITY – A team shall consist of two members who must be 16 years of age or
under on 1st September 2008.

Competitors will be required to show their YFC Membership Cards. Failure to produce a card will result in a £5 penalty charge.

3. PROCEDURE
a) To follow a Country trail, obeying the County Code, and answer questions at various points en route.

b) Country Quiz – to answer questions and identify objects

NOTE: Competitors will need to have a basic knowledge of Flora, Fauna and the Country Code.

4. The Judges decision is final

The winners will be asked to represent Radnor at Wales YFC Field Day on 25th April 2009.


RADNOR FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS

JUNIOR SAFETY COMPETITION

RULES

1. VENUE - the Radnor Field Day will be held at Glanelan, Rhayader, on 19th October, 2008.

2. ELIGIBILITY – A team shall consist of two members who must be 16 years of age or under on 1st September 2008.

Competitors will be required to show their YFC Membership Cards. Failure to produce a card will result in a £5 penalty charge .

3. PROCEDURE

a) One competitor to design a Farm safety poster using a piece of A4 paper, pens, pencils and/or felt tips. (Competitor to supply pens, pencils, felt tip pens – Radnor YFC to provide paper)

b) The second competitor will be briefly shown photographs of a series of Farm situations and will be expected to list the hazards they see (e.g. tractor reversing, loading or unloading a lorry with forklift)

c) Competitors will be required to complete the following first aid task:

i. First team member to place an unconscious casualty (second team member) in to the recovery position
ii. Second team member to place an elevation sling on casualty (first team member) Compeititors to supply own dressings/bandages.
4. TIMING - Thirty minutes allowed for completion of the three tasks.

RADNOR FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS

ATV CHALLENGE COMPETITION
RULES

1. VENUE - the Radnor Field Day will be held at Glanelan, Rhayader on 19th October, 2008.

2. ELIGIBILITY – A team shall consist of two members, one member must be 21 years of age or under and one member must be 26 years of age or under on 1 September 2008.

3. Competitors will be required to show their YFC Membership Cards. Failure to produce a card will result in a £5 penalty charge.

Competitors must hold either a full Driving Licence or Tractor Licence, which must be produced on the day of the competition.

Competitors are required to produce and wear head protection, which protects the head and neck. Helmets to be to current British Standard at the time of the competition.

A certificate of competence in ATV Handling must be produced on the day of the competition.

4. PROCEDURE – One competitor will be required to drive an ATV through a ‘set’ course, negotiating various obstacles and terrain. He/she will also be required to reverse the ATV through one part of that same course. The other competitor will be required to drive forwards through the same set course and in addition hitch to a trailer, manoeuvre that trailer through various obstacles and reverse into ‘set’ garages. Team members will not be allowed to assist each other during the competition.

Marks will be deducted if either the ATV or trailer hits any set obstacles. The number of attempts at each obstacle will also be taken into consideration. The emphasis of the competition will be on skill, balance and safe operation of the machine.

Competitors will be advised as to the make and model of the ATV prior to the competition.

5. TIMING – The first competitor will be allowed 10 minutes to complete the course; second competitor will be allowed 15 minutes to complete the course. One mark per minute or part thereof will be deducted for over time.

RADNOR FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS

FENCE ERECTING
RULES

1. VENUE – the Radnor Field Day will be held at Glanelan, Rhayader, on 19th October, 2008.

2. ELIGIBILITY – A team shall consist of three members, one member shall be 21 years of age or under on 1 September 2008 and two members shall be 26 years of age or under on 1 September 2008.

Competitors will be required to show their YFC Membership Cards. Failure to produce a card will result in a £5 penalty charge.

3. PROCEDURE
a) The team will be required to erect a straight length of approximately 18 metres of stock proof plain wire fencing, to include a stile at the end of the fence. The fence will comprise 5 strands of high tensile plain wire (wire spacing to be determined by the competitors). Each strand of wire must include a tensioner (not a Gripple). A stile (approximately 3ft wide) is to be erected at the end of the fence. Posts are to be pointed.

b) Hand tools only will be allowed and the teams themselves must provide these. No powered tools or chain saws are allowed.

c) Competitors are not allowed to shorten any of the posts.

d) The Judge reserves the right to inspect any strut following completion of the task.

e) All teams are required to dismantle their fence after the Presentation of Awards. Any team not complying with this ruling will be disqualified and their deposit will be retained.

f) Clearing the ground – teams are required to clear away all debris and any off-cuts of wire etc. should not be put down the postholes. Receptacles will be provided for this purpose. Soil will be available to make the ground good.

g) The Judge’s decision will be final.


4. TIMING – 1 ¾ hours will be allowed. Time penalties – teams will be encouraged to complete the task but will lose 1 point per minute over the allocated time.

NB. emphasis is on the skilled jobs of fence erecting, joint in wire, fixing struts hanging gate etc, not digging holes! pointed posts will be used to save time and where possible should be knocked in using a fencing bell,

RADNOR FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS

Tug of War
(Ladies and Men’s Individual Competitions)

R U L E S

1. DATE & VENUE – Sunday 19th October 2008 @ Glanelan, Rhayader by kind permission of Mr & Mrs R Lewis and family

2. ELIGIBILITY - A team shall consist of eight pulling members. A maximum of two members of that team MAY be between the ages of 15 and 18 years on 1 September 2008 and the remainder of the team MUST be over 18 but 26 years of age or under on 1 September 2008 and all competitors must be full members of a Radnor YFC.

Competitors are required to produce on the day their Membership Card.

A coach and trainer who must be amateurs under ToWA Laws are allowed and need not comply with other Rules of eligibility.


3. PROCEDURE - Draw and Byes - The draw will be made on the day of the Competition. Teams will be advised of the time at which they should report. Teams not reporting on time will forfeit any heat missed.

4. All heats will be won by two pulls out of three. Teams shall change ends after reasonable rest on completion of each pull.

5. Points will be awarded as follows:-

3 points To the winners in a straight pull (two straight pulls)
Nil points To the losers in a straight pull
2 points To the winners in the best of three pulls
1 point To the losers in the best of three pulls

6. Radnor YFC have the right to amend the above rules on the day.

The winning teams will be asked to represent Radnor at the Royal Welsh Show.

Radnor YFC Field Day

“Photography”
R U L E S


1. VENUE – Sunday 19th October 2008 @ Glanelan, Rhayader by kind permission of Mr & Mrs R Lewis and family

2. ELIGIBILITY - The competitor must be 26 years of age or under on 1 September 2008 and a full member of a Club affiliated to NFYFC.

3. PROCEDURE – The competitor will be required to produce 3 photographs, 6” x 4”, mounted on an A3 board to the theme “Climate Change”. The photos should include the following:
a. Effects on your surroundings.
b. Effects on your lifestyle.
c. What is happening to slow the process of ‘Climate Change’.

Photographs can be captured using film or Digital photography.

If Digital photography is used as the capture method the photographs MUST NOT be digitally enhanced using photographic software on a computer. The preferred printing method would be to print the photos from the memory card using a commercial photo machine.

If a photo machine is used the appropriate size can be selected and the image can be turned into black & white, sepia or colour but no other alterations can be done for example cropping images, brightness/contrast, colour restoration/balance or any method which would digitally alter the photo quality.

Photos should be self explanatory but a short sentence or title under each photo would be allowed (10 words maximum) or a three sentence script (30 word maximum) anywhere on the A3 board. Text should be separate and NOT within a photograph or this will be perceived as being digitally enhanced.

Radnor YFC Field Day

“Climate Change Model ”
R U L E S


1. VENUE – Sunday 19th October 2008 @ Glanelan, Rhayader by kind permission of Mr & Mrs R Lewis and family

2. ELIGIBILITY - The competitor must be 16 years of age or under on 1 September 2008 and a full member of a Club affiliated to NFYFC.

3. PROCEDURE – The competitor will be required to produce a model made from recycled plastic bottles, maximum size 50cm x 50cm x 50cm, to the theme “Climate Change”. The plastic bottles can be of any size and any colour. The bottles can be glued or wired together no plastic tape to be used. Competitiors may paint the model but cannot attach any extra items to it e.g. feathers, tissue paper.

Model to be brought to Field Day already made.

a. Craftsmanship 50
